- Not even close. While not a true coprocessed board, the ESP (in enhanced mode)
- handles flow control and other housekeeping tasks itself. Between that and the
- MUCH larger buffers (hence, interrupts don't need to be generated anywhere near
- as often... and in enhanced mode, you don't even need to use interrupts until
- you get into the > 512K speed ranges). The bottom line is that your CPU will be
- doing orders of magnitude less work. I can do 28K8 (ports locked at 115K2) with
- both of my Couriers on a 486/100 dedicated file server (IBM Warp Server) that
- also has to handle the overhead of moving the modem data between itself and the
- workstations plus its usual server duties, and only see 2 - 3% CPU usage. That
- same stat goes above 40% with a SINGLE LINE using a plain-vanilla 16550! If
- you've got nothing better to do than stare at a file-transfer window, that's
- your business. I run multitasking O/S's in hopes of continuing to do work while
- such things are going on in the background :-)
-
- Oh, and of course if you ever want to see REAL throughput from an external
- ISDN, cable (or what-have-you) "modem" in the future, 115K2 is woefully
- inadequate (actually, I'm still trying to figure out why USR, Hayes, et al are
- still limiting the DTE <=> DCE rates to 115K2... 33K6 with compression can and
- will exceed the limits of 115K2). Go look at http://www.motorola.com/ or
- http://www.penril.com/ if you want to see just how far V.34+ can be pushed (and
- why they use DCE <=> DTE interfaces capable of 230K4).
-
- Spending $80 - $100 (dual port ESP II) vs. $40 - $60 for a braindead 16550
- card, is a very good deal.
-
- FYI, Hayes is running a direct-purchase special on ESPs until the end of March.
